KENNEWICK (AP) — A brush fire has forced residents of about 10 homes to evacuate in Kennewick.

The Washington state Department of Transportation also has closed Interstate 82 eastbound from exits 109 to 113 because of smoke and poor visibility from the fire.

The Tri-City Herald reports that the fast-moving wildfire has burned across 9 square miles and is being fanned by 20 mph winds. About seven to 10 homes have been evacuated, but no homes have burned. Some other structures have been destroyed.

The American Red Cross is opening a shelter at Highlands Middle School for people displaced by the fire.
