Sandoval leads Real Salt Lake past Charleston

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Rookie forward Devon Sandoval scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in overtime, as Real Salt Lake rallied for a 5-2 win over Charleston on Wednesday night to advance to the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.

With Salt Lake trailing 2-0 at halftime, Sandoval and Joao Plata each scored in the second half to force overtime. Sandoval, Khari Stephenson and Javier Morales scored in the extra period.

Salt Lake will next host Carolina on June 26.

Dane Kelly and Nicki Paterson scored in the first half for the Battery.

Sandoval got Salt Lake on the scoreboard in the 66th minute to cut Charleston’s lead to 2-1. Plata tied it with a penalty kick in the 79th.

Sandoval put Salt Lake ahead for good in the 97th, Stephenson made it 4-2 in the 105th and Morales capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the third minute of stoppage time in the overtime.
