Storm-damaged cars showing up in Washington

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson warns that scam artists are bringing vehicles damaged by Hurricane Sandy to Washington and trying to pass them off as if they are not flood damaged.

One way to protect yourself, Ferguson said, is to check the history of a vehicle before the purchase by going to http://www.vehiclehistory.gov or http://www.carfax.com. Those websites disclose whether a vehicle has been salvaged or flood damaged.

Ferguson’s office also advises that prospective buyers test drive the vehicle, check all of its electrical features and climate controls, look for signs of frame damage or ill-fitting parts and have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.
