ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay slugger Evan Longoria was the Rays’ designated hitter for the second straight game Friday night due to a sore right foot.
Longoria says he has been bothered by plantar fasciitis for probably the past two weeks.
“I’m kind of getting to the point where I really don’t feel like I’m doing it any good to go out there and run around on it, so I can DH and still be effective,” Longoria said. “We’ve had some long games, and one of those games in the Boston series (earlier this week) I was hurting by the end of the game. It’s something I haven’t dealt with before. It’s pretty painful.”
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said the third baseman could be limited to DH through a weekend home series with Kansas City. The Rays are off Monday before starting a road trip Tuesday at Boston.
