SEATTLE — A bicyclist who was killed Saturday near Woodinville was well-known among many riders in the Seattle area as a competitive rider and fundraiser.

The Seattle Times reports 65-year-old Jerry Shafer held several endurance track records for his age group and raised money from a group that fights eye cancer.

Shafer was struck by an oncoming vehicle while attempting to pass other bicyclists. The Kent man worked as an accountant and served on the board of an association that oversees the velodrome at Marymoor park in Redmond.
