SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Retired outfielder Randy Winn is getting an informal taste of coaching in the San Francisco Giants’ farm system to see if it’s something he would like to pursue on a full-time basis.
Winn joined the Class-A San Jose Giants on Monday for a few days after a cross-country flight from his family’s home in Florida. San Jose manager Andy Skeels welcomed Winn, saying it’s always a positive for his players to hear from the game’s former stars — and good for the coaching staff to get another perspective.
The 39-year-old Winn retired in April 2011 after 13 major league seasons with Tampa Bay, Seattle, San Francisco, the New York Yankees and St. Louis. He was a career .284 hitter with 110 home runs and 662 RBIs in 1,717 games.
