WA supreme court hearing on death penalty case

OLYMPIA — A hearing Thursday before the Washington Supreme Court may determine whether King County prosecutors are able to seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing a Seattle police officer.

KIRO reports the court is hearing a request to overturn the decision of a judge who ruled out a possible death sentence because Prosecutor Dan Satterberg failed to consider enough mitigating evidence.

Christopher Monfort is accused of shooting Seattle police Officer Tim Brenton in 2009 on Halloween night, wounding another officer that night and setting fires to police cars earlier in the month.

Monfort has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of aggravated murder, attempted murder and arson.
