SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a Marine Event Permit to America’s Cup officials to conduct racing on San Francisco Bay this summer.
The competition begins with the opening race of the Louis Vuitton Cup for challengers between Emirates Team New Zealand and Italy’s Luna Rossa on July 7.
The Marine Event Permit issued Friday requires the implementation of a safety plan that incorporates the 37 safety recommendations made by the regatta director Iain Murray after Artemis Racing crewman Andrew Simpson was killed in a capsize on May 9.
Emirates Team New Zealand has filed a protest with the International Jury over three of the 37 safety recommendations. The protest is expected to be heard in San Francisco on July 8.
The Louis Vuitton Cup winner faces Oracle Team USA in the 34th America’s Cup beginning Sept. 7.
