Ron Capps tops Funny Car qualifying at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Ron Capps led a flurry of three-second Funny Car runs to take the No. 1 qualifying position Saturday night at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

Capps had the first three-second run in Route 66 Raceway history with a 3.988-second pass at 320.28 mph in a Dodge Charger. He earned his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 15th overall.

Bob Tasca III (3.988), defending series champ Jack Beckman (3.983) and Del Worsham (3.999) also broke the four-second barrier.

Morgan Lucas led the Top Fuel field, Mike Edwards topped the Pro Stock lineup, and Matt Smith was the fastest in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
