Barons team up to revive Canisius basketball

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Coach Jim Baron and his point guard son, Billy, have teamed up at Canisius to inject optimism into a struggling basketball program.

They’ve put their sudden departures at Rhode Island a year ago behind them. That’s when Jim Baron was fired after 11 seasons as the Rams coach. And Billy hit what he called “rock bottom,” feeling partially responsible because he was the starting point guard on a team that went 7-24.

The two have bounced back at the mid-town Buffalo school.

Canisius (18-12) is enjoying its first winning season in 12 years, and after a 5-25 finish last year. With an 11-7 record in the tightly packed Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings, the Golden Griffins are the fourth seed entering the conference tournament at Springfield, Mass., this weekend.
