KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Jesse Berry scored 28 points, including five 3-pointers, off the bench, and Ball State held off a late Western Michigan rally for an 89-85 victory Tuesday night.

Jauwan Scaife added 21 points for the Cardinals (14-14, 7-8 Mid-American). Chris Bond had 16 points, and Majok Majok scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Shayne Whittington had 28 points and 12 rebounds for the Broncos (18-11, 9-6), who failed to clinch their sixth MAC West Division title. WMU is tied with Toledo atop the division, but the Rockets are ineligible for postseason play because they failed to meet NCAA academic standards.

Ball State led by as many as 19 midway through the second half, but WMU rallied in the closing minutes before the Cardinals made enough free throws to secure the win.

Each team finishes its regular season Saturday. WMU hosts Central Michigan, while Ball State hosts Northern Illinois.
