Shumway -- The biggest-ever neighborhood tree planting sponsored by nonprofit Friends of Trees in Vancouver also was the first time some planting crews got around by bike.
About 240 volunteers planted more than 260 trees on Feb. 23, pedaling to planting sites in the Arnada, Carter Park, Central Park, Edgewood Park, Fruit Valley, Hough, Hudson's Bay, Lincoln, Rose Village and Shumway neighborhoods.
The operation was staged at Shumway neighborhood's St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Portland's Friends of Trees provided trees at cost. The organization has planted more than 450,000 trees and native plants since it launched in 1989. Learn more at friendsoftrees.org.
