Try This: Kids in the spotlight

The seventh annual Children’s Festival, hosted by Vancouver Family Magazine, will feature face painting, balloon art, dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, games, and educational information. Children can meet and take pictures with llamas Rojo and Smokey, as well as Napoleon the alpaca of the Mountain Peaks Therapy Llamas. In conjunction with the festival, the Matsiko World Orphan Choir will perform at 11 a.m. and 1 and 2 p.m. Sunday. The choir is made up of 18 orphaned children from Peru and Liberia.

When: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

Artist secrets

Gallery 360 will open up the artist studio with the Second Saturday event. Gallery artist Hilarie Couture will share her method of painting portraits with oil in the “alla prima (all at once)” style with a live-model portrait demonstration.

Play explores genius and love

The Serendipity Players present the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Proof,” which explores the nature of genius and legacy. Catherine is the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematics genius, whom she cared for through a lengthy mental illness. Hal, his graduate student, discovers a revolutionary mathematical proof that he hopes Catherine can figure out. She’s afraid of following in her father’s footsteps, inheriting his genius as well as his burdens.

Salsa for a cause

A night of “Out of Sight Salsa” will feature Ramsey Embick’s Salsa Orchestra in a celebration of the style’s flair. The event will also benefit Vancouver’s School of Piano Technology for the Blind. The Piano Hospital is raising money to hire a new teacher and start an endowment to keep training students to be piano technicians and tuners.

Classic American music

The Southwest Washington Wind Symphony celebrates the innovation of 20th-century composers during “Contemporary American Showcase.” The performance will include songs by Bernstein, Ticheli, Williams and more. The free concert will be performed by the 55-musician concert band; many of the musicians are also music educators in Clark County.

Return to the land of ‘Oz’

Small-time circus magician and con man Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is hurled into the vibrant land of Oz, where all he sees is fame and fortune. That is until he’s pulled into the epic problems facing the land’s inhabitants and its three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams). “Oz the Great and Powerful” is rated PG.
