Dieng is Big East defensive player

NEW YORK (AP) — Louisville junior Gorgui Dieng, who was second in Big East play in rebounding (10.8) and blocked shots (2.8), has been selected the conference’s defensive player of the year.

The Big East also announced Monday that the league’s coaches selected Kadeem Batts of Providence and Michael Carrter-Williams of Syracuse to share the Most Improved Player Award. Marquette junior Davante Gardner won the Sixth Man Award and teammate Junior Cadougan won the Sportsmanship Award.

The conference will announce coach, player and rookie of the year on Tuesday.
