ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Schiaparelli won the $60,000 San Mateo Purse by 312 lengths at Santa Anita on Thursday, wearing blinkers and earmuffs to calm her down.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, Schiaparelli ran 612 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:11.70 and paid $10.60, $4.40 and $3.

“She was a lot more relaxed,” Talamo said. “She’s got a great turn of foot and she ran huge.”

Best Present Ever returned $4 and $2.60, while Ireland-bred filly Esentepe was another half-length back in third in her U.S. debut and paid $2.80 to show.

The victory, worth $36,000, increased Schiaparelli’s career earnings to $120,864, with three wins in six starts.
