LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Big 12 champion Kansas has earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in seven years, opening play in the South Region on Friday against Sun Belt champ Western Kentucky.

In the round of 32? The Jayhawks could get former coach Roy Williams and eighth-seeded North Carolina, whom they beat in a regional final last year on their way to the national championship game.

Kansas will open the tournament at the Sprint Center in nearby Kansas City, Mo., where it is 6-0 this season. That includes three straight wins in the Big 12 tournament.

The Jayhawks captured their ninth conference tournament title Saturday night when they beat Kansas State. That performance likely pushed them to a top line on the bracket.
