BANYOLES, Spain (AP) — Belgium’s Gianni Meersman won the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya on Tuesday to extend his overall lead in the seven-stage race.
The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider timed his final sprint perfectly to finish just ahead of Daniele Ratto and Brett Lancaster, with all three clocking 3 hours, 47 minutes, 43 seconds.
Meersman also won the first stage and has a 14-second lead over Astana rider Valerio Agnoli, who was one of five riders to fall on the last bend Tuesday about 200 meters from the finish.
All five were still awarded the same time as the leaders following rules which govern crashes in the final three kilometers of a stage.
Wednesday’s stage is a 112-mile trek from Vidreres to Setcases.
