ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Kyle Gibbons and Ralph Cuddemi each scored twice as Canisius beat Mercyhurst 7-2 to win the Atlantic Hockey Association championship Saturday night and its first trip to the NCAA tournament.

Tony Capobianco made 34 saves for the seventh-seeded Golden Griffins (19-18-5).

Gibbons scored the first two goals of the game, the first with 41 seconds remaining in the first period.

Cuddemi had two second-period goals. They were sandwiched between one from Matthew Zay that put Mercyhurst (19-17-5) on the board.

The sixth-seeded Lakers made it 4-2 less than a minute into the third period on a goal by Nick Jones. But goals by Cody Freeman, Torrey Lindsay and Ben Parker put the game away.

The win was the eighth straight for Canisius.
