KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — The Houston Astros signed shortstop Ronny Cedeno to a one-year contract Sunday and informed shortstop Tyler Greene he will not make the season-opening roster.

The 30-year-old Cedeno is an eight-year major league veteran who hit .259 in 78 games with the New York Mets last season. He is in the Astros’ lineup for Sunday’s exhibition game against the Miami Marlins.

Greene competed with Marwin Gonzalez for the starting shortstop position this spring, but batted .167 in 42 at-bats. Astros manager Bo Porter said the Astros are exploring their options with the 29-year-old Greene, who would have to clear waivers before they can send him to the minors.

The Astros also optioned outfielder J.D. Martinez to AAA Oklahoma City and reassigned catcher Jason Jaramillo.
