CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the NCAA has asked Miami if university officials ignored evidence that former booster Nevin Shapiro was providing impermissible benefits to Hurricanes’ athletes, coaches or recruits.
The person says that’s the foundation for the NCAA’s charge that Miami had lacked “institutional control.” The person spoke to The Associated Press Friday on condition because specifics related to that part of the notice of allegations against the Hurricanes have not been publicly revealed
The NCAA is insisting that a formal hearing on the Miami charges begin in June. The Hurricanes want the NCAA to drop the case altogether after several issues with the investigation were revealed in recent weeks.
Shapiro is the convicted felon who gave players and recruits impermissible benefits for nearly a decade.
