BEND, Ore. — Authorities say a 12-year-old girl was seriously injured when she slipped and fell 40 feet into the Crooked River Canyon in central Oregon.

KTVZ-TV reports that Allison Billard of Damascus, Ore., a community southeast of Portland, was vacationing with her family at a home in Crooked River Ranch.

Deputies say she and other children were playing too close to a cliff when she slipped.

Rescuers rigged a rope system to rappel down and reach the girl, bringing her up in a stretcher in a two-hour effort. She reportedly was conscious when rescuers reached her.

She was flown to Portland's Oregon Health & Science University, where she was listed in critical condition Thursday night.
