Vancouver firefighters discovered the body of a man Monday morning in a smoldering car west of Vancouver Lake. An autopsy later revealed that the cause of death was suicide, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Emergency personnel were called to a vehicle fire on Erwin O. Rieger Memorial Highway at 6:26 a.m. Monday after a passer-by noticed smoke coming from a Toyota sedan.

Arriving firefighters found a body inside the car, parked near the Vancouver Lake Crew’s facility in Vancouver Lake Park. Vancouver detectives investigated the site and removed the body.

The car had small burn marks on a rear window but did not appear to be heavily damaged.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Unit is investigating.
