Surf perch derby scheduled May 18 at Long Beach

LONG BEACH — The 13th annual Long Beach Surf Perch Derby will be May 18 on the Long Beach Peninsula.

Registration is available online at http://surfperchderby.com or between 5:30 and 8 a.m. at the Surf Perch Derby booth near the north end of the boardwalk on the Bolstad Avenue approach to the beach.

The registration fee is $30 per person prior to May 18 and $35 on May 18. Registration includes a pancake breakfast served from 6 to 11 a.m.

Anglers can cast from anywhere along the 20-mile shoreline of Long Beach Peninsula. Cash prizes will range from $50 to $300. Prizes will be awarded to first- second- and third-place individuals and the same for three-person teams based on total weight of the catch.

A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the heaviest surf perch of the day.

Weigh-in time will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m.

Participants need a Washington saltwater fishing license, which costs $11.35 per day or $30.05 for a season.

The event is sponsored by the Long Beach Lions Club.
