SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — Texas State football coach Dennis Franchione has agreed to a five-year contract extension that pays him $400,000 annually starting in 2014.

The agreement announced Thursday says Franchione will remain at his current base salary of about $350,000 until February. Franchione took over the program in early 2011 and had a five-year deal.

He led Texas State to a 6-6 record as an independent. The Bobcats went 4-8 last season as Franchione guided the program through its transition to Division I. The Bobcats will join the Sun Belt Conference in 2014 after playing one season in the WAC.

Franchione coached the Bobcats from 1990-91 when the school was called Southwest Texas State and in Division II.

Franchione also formerly coached at New Mexico, TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M.
