A 20-month-old boy was in a Portland hospital Sunday night with injuries suffered when his grandfather backed a riding lawn mower over his left leg earlier in the day.

Officials at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel said they could provide no information on Kwinten Lulay, who authorities said was taken to the hospital after the accident at a home near Grove Field in Camas.

The first report was the boy’s leg was severed. Mark Ervin, a battalion chief with the Camas Fire Department, later said it appeared toes were injured and the leg was mangled but not severed.

The accident happened at 27303 N.E. 36th St. Clark County Sheriff’s deputies said the boy lives there with his mom, Kara; dad, Jared; grandfather, Alan; and grandmother, Lori.

The call came in at 3:05 p.m., with 10 personnel from East County Fire & Rescue and the Camas Fire Department responding to the incident, Ervin said.

A Life Flight helicopter took the boy from Grove Field in Camas to Randall Children’s Hospital, Ervin said.
