SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon Legislature has passed a bill that will allow hospitals to release placentas to mothers who’ve just given birth.
The Oregon Senate unanimously approved the bill on Monday. It now goes to the governor.
Under current law, hospitals are prohibited from releasing hazardous medical waste, which includes human placentas. Oregon hospitals, however, have allowed mothers to take home their placentas for cultural and religious reasons.
Some mothers have their placentas put into capsules and then consume it because they believe it boosts their energy and counteracts post-partum depression.
