Helton pleads guilty to driving while impaired

DENVER (AP) — Rockies first baseman Todd Helton has been sentenced to a year of probation and 24 hours of community service after pleading guilty to driving while ability-impaired.

The Denver Post reports (http://tinyurl.com/cnzp944 ) Helton entered his plea Tuesday in an Adams County courtroom in the northeast Denver suburb of Brighton.

Helton was arrested Feb. 6 in Thornton, another suburb. Police said he told officers he had had two cups of wine. He issued a public apology later that day and again two weeks later when Spring Training opened.

Helton is a career .320 hitter, a five-time All-Star and a three-time winner of the Gold Glove. He has spent his entire career with the Rockies and is one of the most popular and recognizable players on the team.

Helton’s hitting .267 this season.
