The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says a 21-year-old Oregon Ducks tennis player drowned after jumping from a 60-foot cliff at Tamolitch Falls.
The Oregonian reports the sheriff’s office confirmed his death on Sunday.
Authorities say Alex Rovello was too deep in the 37-degree water for friends and bystanders to save him. He was found between 30 and 40 feet below the surface.
The graduate of Portland’s Cleveland High School became the first player in state history to win four singles state titles.
Rovello finished his high school career with 50-0 singles record and went 65-2 in the Pacific Northwest. He ranked as high as No. 24 in the nation and won two Pacific Cup titles.
He was 21-8 this season for the Ducks.
