SASKATOON, Saskatchewan — Nathan McKinnon scored twice in a five-goal second period as the Halifax Mooseheads overcame a 3-1 deficit Saturday to defeat the Portland Winterhawks, 7-4, in the first game for both teams at the Memorial Cup tournament.

McKinnon ended up with a hat trick for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champions in the victory over the Western Hockey League champion in the round-robin tournament.

Portland gave up the first goal — McKinnon got the assist on Martin Fryk’s tally — before Seth Jones netted the equalizer less than a minute later for Portland.

The Winterhawks took a lead on Troy Rutkowski’s goal just 39 seconds into the second period, then Ty Rattie made it 3-1 with a power play goal at 2:11 of the period.

The Mooseheads then took over, scoring twice at even strength, twice on power plays and once shorthanded to lead 6-3.

Rutkowski scored his second goal 69 seconds into the final period, but Portland got no closer.

Zachary Fucale made 37 saves for Halifax.

Mac Carruth stopped 28 shots for the Winterhawks.

Portland next faces Ontario Hockey League champion London on Monday, then tournament host Saskatoon of the WHL on Wednesday.
