SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Washington Nationals will be without reliever Ryan Mattheus after learning that the right-hander broke his pitching hand punching a locker in frustration following his rocky outing Sunday.

Manager Davey Johnson made the announcement after the Nationals’ 8-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

The news came on the same night that the Giants lost starter Ryan Vogelsong to a fractured hand after he was hit by a pitch while batting in the fifth inning.

Mattheus allowed five runs in one inning of Washington’s 13-4 loss to the San Diego Padres. According to Johnson, Mattheus did not inform the team of his injury until just before Tuesday’s game at AT&T Park.
