Letter: Pilfered at the pump

The Columbian
Published: May 22, 2013, 5:00pm

The price at the pump jumped dramatically in the last few weeks. Just two weeks ago I was paying $3.31 per gallon for regular unleaded. Now at the same station it is $3.83 per gallon; a 16 percent increase in that small period of time. What other retailer can get away with that large an increase?

Gas consumption is down in this country 12 percent. So why the increase? We are producing close to the same production of oil as Saudi Arabia and will be surpassing them by 2018. So why the increase? Well here you go, they have been loading American-pumped oil into oil tankers and exporting American-pumped oil to China and India. So now our oil stocks are low and they are buying high-priced oil from OPEC.

Where is the outrage? Why aren’t our legislators screaming about this? I challenge our legislators to step up and work hard to protect us from this blatant form of stealing from the American consumer. This wreaks havoc on the American economy. Republicans, Democrats, Tea Party members — all of us should be on the same page on this one.

So how can they get away with this? Because at this point they can.
