VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Matteo Manassero became the youngest champion in the 58-year history of the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday, beating Simon Khan of England on the fourth playoff hole for his fourth European Tour title.

Manassero, 20 years and 37 days, made amends for letting victory slip away at the event two years ago. The previous youngest winner was Bernhard Gallacher of Scotland at 20 years, 97 days in 1969.

With the win, the Italian qualified for next month’s U.S. Open and avoided a 36-hole qualifier Monday at the Walton Heath course.

Marc Warren of Scotland, Manassero and Khan were tied at 10-under 278 after regulation play. Warren was eliminated after the first playoff hole.
