ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — American shot putter Adam Nelson will get the gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics that was stripped from a Ukrainian rival because of doping.

Nelson finished second in Athens behind Yuriy Bilonog, who was stripped of the gold medal in December. IOC officials say Thursday that Nelson has been bumped up to the gold medal.

The IOC says it has reallocated the medals from three Athens events in which athletes were retroactively disqualified after their doping samples were retested and came back positive.

The IOC held off changing the medals until the results were officially adjusted by the international track and field governing body.
