CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs called up right-handed pitcher Zach Putnam from Triple-A Iowa Thursday and sent down right-handed pitcher Alex Burnett to the minor league club.
Putnam was 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA in 19 1-3 innings at Iowa, where he had been slated to share closer duties. He had been with the Cubs in training camp, but was sent down when the season began.
“I had a pretty good spring,” Putnam said. “Obviously it was disappointing that I wasn’t able to break camp with the team, but that’s one of those things where you kind of just have to keep on keeping on and I felt like I started the season pretty well in Triple-A.”
Burnett had been claimed Monday after being put on waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. He pitched one inning with the Cubs.
