ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — The IOC has reprimanded former Hungarian president Pal Schmitt in a plagiarism case.

Schmitt has been an IOC member since 1983. The Olympic body says he has decided to “suspend himself” from any position on IOC commissions.

Schmittt resigned as Hungarian president last year after a university panel found that most of his doctoral thesis about the modern Olympics had been copied from other authors.

Schmitt says he acted in good faith and was unaware at the time his 1992 thesis did not meet academic standards.

The IOC ethics commission investigated. On Thursday, the IOC executive board said a reprimand was sufficient because Schmitt decided he would not serve on any commissions.

Schmitt had been chairman of the IOC sport and environment commission.
