A Longview-based paper mill was recognized as a leader in sustainability, receiving the Greenhouse Gas Reduction/Energy Efficiency Award from the American Forest & Paper Association.

The award was presented Nov. 1 at the association’s annual meeting in Charleston, S.C.

The award to the KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp. mill, formerly Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging Inc., recognizes the results of a three-year improvement project that reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 72 percent, reduced overall energy use by 37 percent and increased total paper production by 50 percent, according to a statement issued by Northbrook, Ill.-based KapStone. The company acquired Longview Fibre this year for $1.03 billion, adding the mill to its portfolio of 15 paper mills nationwide.
