College notebook: Big Sky Conference honors PSU’s Brown

Vikings forward back to all-star form after injury battle

Portland State junior forward Eryn Brown was named to the All-Big Sky second team in selections announced Tuesday.

The Camas High School graduate was also a second team honoree as a freshman in 2010 before losing the 2011 season with a knee injury then working her way back during the 2012 campaign.

A senior in academic standing and on track to graduate in the spring, Brown may not return to the Vikings next season for her final year of collegiate eligibility.

With seven goals this season, Brown has moved into sole possession of fourth place all-time in goals scored at Portland State (13), and also ranks fourth all-time in goals per game (0.25).

Brown’s 19 points this season so far have her fifth in a single season and give her 32 in her career, ranking her tied for fifth all-time at PSU.

She is tied for fifth in PSU history with seven goals this season and tied for sixth with five assists.

Only two players have ever recorded more goals and assists in each category in a single season than Brown this fall.

Portland State is hosting the Big Sky Tournament this weekend at Hillsboro Stadium. The Vikings (11-4-2, 8-0-1 Big Sky) will face Northern Colorado (9-5-5, 5-2-2) at 3 p.m. Thursday. The championship match is slated for 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

GNAC honors WWU’s Sych, SPU’s Harold

• Western Washington senior defender Brina Sych was named to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference second team in selections announced Tuesday.

The Union High School graduate, a first team pick last year and was named GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, has one goal and five assists this season.

The Vikings (16-1) will face Western Oregon (9-3-6) in the GNAC semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Starfire.

• Seattle Pacific senior Natalie Harold was named honorable mention at goalkeeper. The Heritage High School graduate has allowed 12 goals this season, with a goals-against average of 0.75, and made 42 saves with a save percentage of .778. She has 14 career shutouts, nine of them this season.

The Falcons (13-5) will face Central Washington (11-5-1) in the GNAC semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday at Starfire Stadium.

Men’s soccer

Concordia’s Danciu CCC player of week

Concordia senior forward Septi Danciu was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.

The Evergreen High School graduate scored three goals during the week and established a new Cavaliers record for career goals (53). He has 15 goals and 13 assists this season, leading the CCC in both categories.

His average of 2.53 points a game ranks Danciu 10th in the NAIA while his seven game-winning goals is one behind the NAIA national leader.

Concordia (12-4, 9-3 CCC) concludes the regular season Saturday with a 6 p.m. home match against Warner Pacific.

Women’s golf

Bartek helps Hornets win Hawaii tournament

Sacramento State freshman Chloe Bartek shot better every day of the University of Hawaii’s Rainbow Wahine Invitational played Oct. 29-31 at Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa.

The Columbia River High School graduate shot 79-75-74–228, the best 54-hole total of her collegiate career, as the Hornets rallied for a one-stroke victory over Hawaii and New Mexico State.

Class 3A state champion as a River senior, Bartek had stretches of six birdies in eight holes and four of her last five during her final-round 74 on Thursday, her lowest competition round of the season.

The event concluded Sacramento State’s fall schedule.

Cross country

Conference meets

Athletes from Clark County competing in cross country conference championship meets:n Pacific-12 Conference at Louisville, Colo. — Washington State sophomore Abby Knight (Heritage High School), 96th in 26:19 over 6 kilometers, the Cougars’ seventh finisher.

• West Coast Conference at Malibu, Calif. — University of Portland freshman Lindsay Tompkins (Prairie High School) was 38th in 22:53 over 6 km, the sixth runner for the runner-up Pilots. University of the Pacific sophomore Lindsay Wourms (Camas High School) led the Tigers by placing 45th in 23:01.

• Mid-American Conference at Bowling Green, Ohio — University of Toledo junior Priscilla Timmons (Skyview High School) was 28th in 22:16.72 over 6 km. She was the eighth runner for the runner-up Rockets.

• Big Sky Conference at Bozeman, Mont. — In the men’s race, Idaho State freshman Andrew Kaler (Camas High School) was 48th in 27:02.75, the Bengals’ sixth runner.In the 3-mile women’s race, Weber State senior Kayla Blackford (Camas High School), 52nd in 18:22.7, the Wildcats’ seventh runner; and Portland State sophomore Katherine Hendricks (Skyview High School), 72nd in 19:04.9, the Vikings’ fourth runner.
