The Portland Winterhawks had their 11-game winning streak snapped as they fell 3-2 to the Tri-City Americans on Wednesday at the Moda Center in front of 5,046 fans.

The Hawks (14-4-0-1) struck first when Taylor Leier beat Tri-City netminder Evan Sarthou at the 13:27 mark of the first period to make it 1-0, the lone goal of the opening frame.

Midway through the second Portland made it 2-0 when Chase De Leo took a feed from Oliver Bjorkstrand, got in behind the defense and put it high over Sarthou’s shoulder to extend the lead. The Americans (11-8-0-2) got on the board at the 13:50 mark when Connor Rankin scored to cut the Hawks’ lead to 2-1, then tied it with just 1.2 seconds left in the frame on a goal by Brian Williams to make it 2-2 going into the third.

It remained a tie until with just 26.6 seconds remaining the Americans’ Parker Bowles scored to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. The Hawks tried to get the equalizer in the waning seconds, but the Americans hung on for the win.

Brendan Burke made 27 saves on 30 losses, while Sarthou stopped 24 of Portland’s 26 shots.

The Hawks are back in action Saturday when they host the Victoria Royals at the Moda Center at 7 p.m.
