Letter: ‘Supplemental’ is key in SNAP

The Columbian
Published: November 7, 2013, 4:00pm

The small story titled “Try living on food stamps this month” in the Around the Area section Nov. 2 is, to be kind, misleading.

The brief invites Clark County residents to live on a food budget of $4.50 per day, the amount of money people receive from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The key word here is “supplemental.” The $4.50 per day those on the SNAP program receive is meant to supplement their food budget, not be their full budget.

Some of the less-informed people in Clark County, assuming they actually read The Columbian, might not pick up on that distinction.
