BROOKLYN, N.Y. (AP) — Gerrell Martin scored 24 points and made six 3-pointers to lead LIU Brooklyn past St. Peter’s 87-80 on Saturday in a season opener for both teams.

Gilbert Parga made back-to-back 3-pointers to extend LIU’s lead to 56-46 with 12:33 left. But St. Peter’s clawed its way back and took its first lead of the second half at 69-68. Two LIU 3-pointers, during a 13-3 run, pushed the Blackbirds to an 81-72 lead with 49 seconds remaining.

Marvin Dominique recorded a double-double with 31 points and 14 rebounds for St. Peter’s.

It was the 35th meeting all-time between the schools and the home team has now won the last seven contests.
