MUNICH (AP) — Voters have turned down plans for Munich to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Local media say early returns from Sunday’s ballot give Olympic opponents a majority.

Olympic planners needed to have a majority “yes” vote in all four Bavarian communities that went to the polls and were planned as the hubs of the games.

Munich and the community of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the planned site for Alpine events, were among the voting areas. Bavarian radio said opponents won a majority in all four communities.

Munich failed in its bid for the 2018 Winter Games. It had hoped to become the first venue to stage both Winter and Summer Games. It hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics.
