Letter: Elect to look to future votes

The Columbian

As you turned in your ballot for this year’s general election, be sure to mark your calendars for the August 2014 primary. Why start thinking now about voting in August? One reason is that Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, has already drawn a Republican primary opponent, Michael Delavar, outraged that the representative voted to end the federal government shutdown and prevent a government default.

I disagree with Herrera Beutler on a number of issues, but applaud her Oct. 16 vote because it showed me she listened to all of her constituents, recognized the consequences of a government default, and was willing to face reality, including the prospect of being “primaried” by someone from her own party due to her vote.

The future of our community and nation depends on thoughtful voters coming out in force and supporting candidates of whatever party or persuasion who listen to all their constituents and who can work across the aisle to solve problems. So, please mark the calendar, study the issues and candidates, and vote.
