CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — James Sinclair scored 17 points to lead Western Carolina to a win over in-state foe UNC Asheville 74-67 Monday night.
Tom Tankelewicz and Tawaski King joined Sinclair in double figures for Western Carolina (2-0), as both added 14 points.
UNC Asheville’s (0-2) Andrew Rowsey led all scorers with 24. D.J. Cunningham had the games only double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Western Carolina took a 38-27 lead in to halftime and never trailed in the second half. Both teams were evenly matched shooting around 40 percent from the field, and the Catamounts only outrebounded the Bulldogs 38-37, but led in takeaways 18-11.
Coming off of Saturday’s 89-57 loss to top ranked Kentucky, UNC Asheville is still looking for their first win under new head coach Nick McDevitt, a former player for the Bulldogs.
