John McDonagh, publisher of the Vancouver Business Journal, was one of 16 “hometown heroes” selected by Safeco Insurance earlier this fall for his decades of volunteerism with Share Vancouver, the nonprofit agency that cares for the hungry and homeless. After that, McDonagh moved up to runner-up in an online voting contest; his strong finish earned $5,000 for Share in addition to the $5,000 Safeco was already donating.
