Norfolk State defeats Division II Newberry 115-95

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Rashid Gaston finished with a double-double and led Norfolk State to a 115-95 victory over Division II Newberry on Wednesday night.

Gaston shot 7 of 8 from the field, scoring 20 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds for the Spartans (1-1). Two other Norfolk State players, Jamel Fuentes (12 points) and Malcolm Hawkins (15 points) scored in double digits. The Spartans shot 41 of 68 from the field (60.3 percent).

Dondray Walker came off the bench and scored 20 points for the Wolves (2-0), hitting 4 of 8 from behind the arc as Newberry drained 16 3-pointers in its exhibition game. The Wolves couldn’t match the shooting accuracy of the Spartans and finished 30 of 73 from the field (41.1 percent).

The Wolves led 48-46 with 1:30 to play in the first half, but Norfolk State outscored them 64-47 in the final 20 minutes.
