FIFA overturns soccer elections in Morocco

ZURICH (AP) — FIFA has overturned soccer election results in Morocco, the country that will host next month’s Club World Cup.

FIFA says its emergency committee refused to recognize the Moroccan Football Association elections held Sunday, which sought to install Fouzi Lekjaa as president and ended with ill-tempered clashes at a news conference.

FIFA says it acted because Morocco’s federation “had not fulfilled its duty to comply with FIFA directives.”

Instead, FIFA says the previous executive committee — headed by Ali Fassi Fihri — remains in charge until new elections “in the first half of 2014.”

FIFA says its decision “will not have any effect” on the Club World Cup scheduled for Dec. 11-21 in Marrakech and Agadir.

Morocco is also preparing to host the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
