DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — Jordan Threloff and Daveon Balls came off the bench to score in double figures and lead Northern Illinois to a 60-59 victory over San Jose on Saturday night at the NIU Invitational

Threloff scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Daveon Balls 15 on a 5-of-9 effort. The rest of the Huskies (1-2) were 4 of 37, a frigid 10.8 percent.

The Huskies’ 34.5 percent night was matched by the Spartans’ 34.8. The Huskies had a 47-37 rebounding edge, including 19 offensive boards as NIU outscored SJSU 30-10 in the paint.

SJSU closed to 55-54 with 1:55 left. Neither team scored again until NIU’s Travon Baker made two free throws with 16 seconds left. After another NIU free throw SJSU got within two, but Aaron Armstead’s two free throws gave NIU the cushion to weather a last-second SJSU 3-pointer.

Jaleel Williams led four Spartans in double figures with 13 points.
