BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — The president of a first-division Argentine soccer club resigned Tuesday, a day after players went on strike and refused to play a game because they had not been paid.

Players for Colon say they are owed between three and seven months’ salary. One player, Ronald Raldes of Bolivia, headed home earlier this month.

The resignation of Colon President German Lerche was announced by club Vice President Ruben Moncagatta.

The Colon players refused to play against Atletico Rafaela. The Argentine Football Association has not ruled, but Colon is expected to forfeit the match.

Many Argentine clubs are deeply in debt, including the most famous ones like Boca Juniors, River Plate and Independiente.
