KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee is bringing back its gray alternate uniforms for Saturday’s game with Vanderbilt.
Volunteers coach Butch Jones said Tuesday that the team’s seniors voted to wear the alternate uniforms for their home finale. The uniform features a dark gray color the school calls “Smokey gray,” a nod to the team’s mascot.
Tennessee previously wore Smokey gray uniforms Oct. 5 for a 34-31 overtime loss to Georgia. That marked the first time Tennessee had used an alternate uniform since wearing black jerseys for a 31-13 victory over South Carolina on Oct. 31, 2009.
Jones said that “we talked about the gray becoming more standard a little bit in our football program, so it’s just something with our seniors, that they wanted to do, and I think it’s a reward for them.”
