A man who was believed to have been napping in a dilapidated hay shed was reported injured Friday morning after the shed caught fire.

The fire was reported at 9:04 a.m. in a pasture along the west side of Northeast Covington Road, just north of Northeast Rosewood Avenue.

Vancouver firefighters were quick to arrive but found the small shed, which sits by itself, fully involved in flames.

They soon discovered a man who was apparently napping in the old shed when the fire started. An ambulance was called to take him to a hospital for treatment.

The burning shed was about the size of a fireworks stand, and was full of hay, according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

There was no danger to other buildings, but it took firefighters a while to make sure all of the burning hay was properly extinguished. They used a water tender to augment the engine companies’ water supply.

County property records show the 2-acre lot, which has no house on it, is owned by Carla Weber of Vancouver.
